DAILY PROBLEM SOLVING
Problems force us to rethink our programs and patterns and, in
doing so, the possibility for new learning emerges. Parents have
a unique opportunity to teach the problem solving process and to
observe learning in action. The first step in problem solving
is to identify the problem. The second step is to brainstorm
one or more solutions. The third step is to try a solution, and
the fourth step is to find out what works. Of course, the end
of the process is to try again and again until the problem is
solved. |
PATIENCE AND
ENCOURAGEMENT
It takes patience to watch the problem-solving process unfold. Many a parent
has wanted to intervene when a tower built by a toddler crashes to the ground.
But as the child tries new techniques, she learns what works and what doesn’t.
Questions asked at just the right time can be very helpful. “I wonder what the
problem is? Do you think a bigger block on the bottom will help?” “Do you
think this is as tall as This tower can be?” |
Involve children in daily problem solving:
--We ran out of wrapping paper for Grandma’s present.
What can we use?
--What do we need to buy for your birthday party?
--We don’t have time to play Candyland right now. What
do we have time for?
--What should we pack for our vacation?
