Childhood Obesity: The Reality Check
The number of overweight children has risen dramatically over
the past two decades. Diseases found in middle-aged patients,
such as type 2 diabetes, gallstones and liver failure, are now
being found in young children.
Bring on the Good Stuff!
Here are some examples of simple, low-fat and low-sugar foods
that are 100 calories or less:
~ a medium-size apple, a medium-size banana, 1 cup blueberries,
a serving of low fat crackers, 1 cup grapes, 1 cup carrots,
broccoli or bell peppers with 2 Tbsp. hummus
Cooking: Ranch Slaw
This slaw recipe takes only a few minutes to make, and children
can help.
½ cup raisins
1/3 cup ranch salad dressing
1/3 cup sour cream
1 bag (16 ounces) tricolored coleslaw mix
In a
large bowl, stir together raisins, salad dressing, and sour
cream. Add coleslaw and gently combine. Serves 6.
Bubble Solution
Bubbles provide a fun and inexpensive activity.
½ cup liquid detergent
1 ½ cup water
Glycerine for stronger bubbles
Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl or plastic tub.
Bubble blowers can be made from pipe cleaners, paper cups with
the end cup out, berry baskets, and straws. Empty margarine tubs
make great bubble containers.
Turn
this activity into a science experiment by asking a few
questions and observing what happens.
~ What happens when you blow hard?
~ What happens when you blow gently?
~ Could we make colored bubbles?
~ Why does a bubble disappear when it’s popped?
~ How far do you thing a bubble can go?
~ How can we make a bubble float up or down?
